Bolton Center for Sport Ethics to host performance psychologist

Performance psychologist Sam Maniar, Ph.D., will visit campus on March 17, 2017 at 12 p.m., CPASS room G08, to speak about the ethical challenges to consultation in professional sports. The CPASS Russell “Bud” Bolton Center for Sport Ethics will host the event, which is free and open to the public.

Maniar, WVU Counseling Psychology doctoral graduate, has extensive experience working with teams, athletes and executives, from a wide range of sports and industries, about achieving performance goals.

The talk will embrace numerous professions. “As the title indicates, I will be addressing some of the ethical challenges of being a sport psychologist in professional sports. While I will share some of the situations I was in as a sport psychologist, the presentation will be applicable to those who aspire to be athletic trainers, nutritionists, physical therapists, strength and conditioning coaches, etc. in professional sports,” said Maniar.

Maniar will use case studies and identify ethical statutes in addressing specific ethical challenges. “My hope is that by knowing in advance some possible ethical challenges, those aspiring to work in professional sports will not only be more prepared, they will also have some idea of how they will respond should they encounter some of the same issues,” Maniar added.

Maniar is the president and founder of the Center for Peak Performance: Business and Sport Psychology Consultation in Hudson, Ohio. The Center focuses on working with individuals and organizations to develop innovative solutions to help achieve peak potential.

The Center offers both business and sport psychology services including executive coaching, leadership development programs and selection of high potential leaders. Center experts provide mental training for teams or individual athletes and pre-draft evaluations.

With his ability to strategically and creatively develop talent, Maniar uses sport psychology and his comprehensive athletic experience to help individuals and organizations reach their potential.
