CPASS professor will promote physical activity at state healthcare conference

Healthcare innovators from across West Virginia will gather next month in an attempt to prevent and reverse West Virginia’s soaring rates of chronic disease. Sam Zizzi, Pat Fehl Endowed Professor, sport and exercise psychology with CPASS, will share insight and research at Try This for Healthcare Professionals Conference, June 1-3 at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia.

The conference will offer practical strategies for engaging patients and communities in movement, food and stress management. Topics include reversing diabetes, approaches to childhood obesity and dietary approaches for opioid dependence.

Zizzi will focus on engaging health professionals through physical activity promotion. During the session, Zizzi will discuss how nurses, physician assistants and medical doctors can use the existing fitness infrastructure in the state to make referrals to increase physical activity in patients at risk for chronic disease.

Other speakers who will participate include Clay Marsh, vice president and executive dean, WVU Health Sciences, Mark Cucuzzella, professor, Family Medicine at WVU School of Medicine, and keynote speaker Gary Taubes, renowned scientific journalist and author.

According to the organization, more than 500 West Virginia residents will collaborate at the conference to create healthier communities within the state.

Try This for Healthcare Professionals was developed by Emma Eggleston, M.D., nationally recognized lifestyle medicine expert, in coordination with WVU colleagues, the Try This staff, the Future of Nursing and the nutrition department of the Pierpont Community and Technical College.
