SEP graduate selected as a fellow by prestigious leadership program

Lindsey Blom, EdD 2005, sport and exercise psychology, has been named a Fellow for the 2016 Journey Executive Leadership program recognizing Indiana leaders in youth development. Blom, SEP associate professor at Ball State University, manages the “Soccer for Social Change” program alongside the Indiana Soccer Association.

Blom has introduced the program in multiple countries worldwide. She plans to study the effects of sport, specifically soccer for youth development in Liberia. Prior to receiving the Fellowship, Blom has helped youth in countries such as Jordan and Tajikistan learn life lessons through the game of soccer.

“Soccer is a global sport that does not require much equipment to play. It speaks a universal language in other countries. Additionally, it is my sport love, one that speaks to me and something I love to share with others. It is wonderful to have a passion of mine be part of my work,” Blom said.

Blom is thankful for the grant and will continue her studies in the importance of youth sport for development. “Receiving funding from the Benjamin V. Cohen Peace Memorial fund is a great opportunity to be able to study the positive peace indicators and the development of purpose in youth involved in a sport for development in Liberia. It gives us an opportunity to further explore the mechanisms behind behavior change,” Blom added.

According to Blom, her experience at WVU offered her countless number of networking opportunities as well as life lessons she will never forget. “WVU gave me a solid education foundation, a chance to practically apply my skills, and helpful research experience. I was also able to teach courses and work with an after school program that inspired my current work.”

“The SEP faculty build relationships, relationships that develop students as true professionals as well as a family of professionals that allow us to expand our reach and resources. They are certainly experts in the field, good teachers and excellent scholars that help develop students; the relationship built is the key component to really advance the program,” Blom concluded.
