CPASS guest lecture to feature ethics in sport

CPASS will host Shellie Pfohl, president and CEO of SafeSport, March 31, 2017 at 12 p.m. in CPASS room G08. The virtual guest lecture featuring SafeSport’s leadership plan for ethical responsibility in sport is hosted by the CPASS Russell “Bud” Bolton Center for Sports Ethics. The talk is free and open to the public.

Pfohl has worked as executive director of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition after being appointed by President Obama in 2010. Pfohl also led the council’s efforts in support of support First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative, working to solve the childhood obesity epidemic within the United States.

Previously, she has served as senior vice president of Partnerships for HOPSports Inc. and has co-founded the non-profit organization Be Active North Carolina. Pfohl has lead a career dedicated to improving the quality of physical fitness and education in the United States.

The Russell “Bud” Bolton Center for Sports Ethics enhances offerings in athletic coaching education, sport management and sport and exercise psychology programs. The center promotes the use of specialized lectures, case studies, guest speakers and research related to the topics of ethics in sports as integral parts of the courses in each of the programs. 

According to Kristen Dieffenbach, associate professor, athletic coaching education, the center’s mission focuses on increasing the awareness related to and knowledge of the best practices related to the ethical issues affecting modern sport. The center’s efforts include quality research, the collection and dissemination of ethical resources and promotion of the study of ethics in sport among students and faculty. 

The U.S. Center for Safe Sport is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a healthy and supportive environment for all sport organization participants. Safe Sport works directly with the sports community to ensure a culture of safety through education and training. This center is the first national non-profit organization committed to preserving the safety and well-being of athletes.
