National strength group selects CPASS faculty member as statewide leader

The National Strength and Conditioning Association has named Guy Hornsby, CPASS teaching assistant professor, as a new West Virginia state director.

As part of a network of volunteer organizers, Hornsby will direct NSCA’s efforts at the state level. State directors coordinate and host the West Virginia NSCA state clinic by communicating with the WV NCSA advisory board, a diverse group of researchers and conditioning related professionals throughout the state.

Hornsby is responsible for efforts to increase NSCA participation throughout the state and the Mid-Atlantic Region, which includes West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia/DC.

Hornsby said he felt excited about the opportunities that acting as a state director provide. “I’m particularly eager about the opportunity it will provide our strength and conditioning minors and strength and conditioning-focused graduate students,” Hornsby said.

“The state clinic will afford our students the ability to learn from and meet some of leading experts in the field,” he added.

Hornsby served as a student member of the NSCA throughout his time as an undergraduate and graduate student until becoming a professional member in 2013.

He has attended NSCA national conferences since 2010 and gave a presentation on periodization and athlete monitoring at the 2014 and 2015 NSCA national conferences. Hornsby has published in the NSCA's Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and participated in NSCA special interest groups for weightlifting and baseball.

Hornsby has extensive involvement in the sport of weightlifting and weightlifting research. He is currently serving as head coach of West Virginia Weightlifting and was previously a member of the Sport Science Staff for the 2015 World Weightlifting Championship in Houston, TX.
